Location & traffic
The city is located in the southwest part of Sweden, where the Götaälv flows into the Kattegatt. Gothenburg is the administrative seat of the provinces Gothenborg and Bohus. Gothenburg was founded in 1621 as a maritime trade center and has been Sweden's gateway to the world for many centuries. The port from which the city has profited so much for so long has lost its importance for the city and its inhabitants, leaving Gothenburg in search of a new identity. The city itself is maritime and cosmopolitan in character. |
